UML Experience with JUDE

こんにちわ。キャスです。

These past days we were able to experience UML using JUDE UML Modeling Tool. The figure below shows two of the few diagrams we made during the whole UML course. (Click on figures)

This is the Class Diagram we made for a Tracer System and Activity Diagram for the Automatic Brake System - two of the sample use cases we worked on during the course. Other forms of diagramming were also practiced - the Class Diagram and the UseCase Diagram. My first hand experience with JUDE was hard because of the unfamiliarity of the environment. But it is now easier to understand, especially if one understands the concepts behind UML.

(MyFriend-My First Nihonggo Speech)

I decided to publish my first speech made entirely in Nihonggo for documentation purposes. Hehehe.. I feel really like a toddler making futile attempts to write her first paragraph. I just miss my school paper days when I don’t fumble with choosing the right words to say. Hehehe.. Here goes…

Translation:

My friend is Jufni Rizada(リザダジュフニさん). Her nickname is Jufu San(ジュフさん). She is a trainee of a company. Her father’s and mother’s names are Aniceto and Josephine. Her birthday is May 2. She is 20 years old.

Jufu San’s shool is CIT. Her phone number is にいさんろくのなないちろくきゅう. She goes to work from Monday to Friday. She rests on Saturdays and Sundays. Jufu San doesn’t smoke cigarettes. She eats her breakfast at home. She goes to the office by jeepney.
See how elementary it is! Sometimes, I prefer not to translate to English my Nihonggo essays since they all sound so basic. Aaargh! But soon enough, I’ll get the hang of it. And maybe, I can make my writing in Nihonggo as well as I do with English. SIGH (–,)

First Hand Database Development and Design Experience

We spent a couple of days in Database Development. Using JUDE (Java and UML Developers’ Environment)/Community, we developed the design through UML. It was a flexible software that can be used to design classes and object, entity-relationship diagrams, flow charts, states and transition, and et cetera. IT is a software design for object-oriented software design, particularly Jave(TM) and UML1.4.
PostgreSQL 8.2 is the open-source relational database system we used in developing our mini-project. (We just had our defense hal an hour ago! Whew! Mind you! It was my first time to be given an assignment - database development in particular- to be done within two days!!).
It has the following features:
  • Runs on all major operating system (Linux, UNIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and etcetera)
  • Fully ACID compliant
  • Supports storage of large binary objects.
  • Native programming interfaces for C/C++, Java, Net, Perl, Python, Ruby, ODBC and et cetera.

I’m getting a bit tired. You better check their site. My first hand experience with PostgreSQL, and JUDE was tough. I don’t find any of them "user-friendly".. (SIGH!) But anyway, it’s a good experience having to learn a new environment aside from the usual database system I used before.

I’m looking forward to working on our actual project according to the Dev where we will be assigned later in the training. And we will still be using these softwares for the design and development. I still don’t know where I will be assigned. We are expected to have three releases of the system - the ALPHA Release, BETA Release, and the Release Candidate. And these all happen within less than 2-months.

Dev3 deals with business applications (web programming and alike) while Dev5 focuses on hardcore programming particularly RAID and embedded systems. The company has Japanese clientele who are very much particular with quality. Maybe, I may be assigned to Software and Quality Assurance(ambisyosa!!!!!), apart from the DEVS since it’s only afew of them.

I have been bred in Web development (courtesy of my ‘kare’ who’s a web developer for a couple of years already). I think it’s weird though, to be used to web development when I’m a Computer Science graduate. (SIGH!!) It’s better than to end up being jobless. Hekhek…

Oyasuminasai, minna san. Kyou no shigoto o owarimasho!! Ganbatte kudasai.

Sour Cream

It’s hard to be in a group of intellectual people - particularly those who are considered to be the cream of the crop. It’s hard to deal with people who seem to be trying to dominate each other - taking turns trying to outstand everyone.

It’s hard to be in a group of people who thinks they all have to say something to belong in the "group of intellectuals". It’s defeating the purpose of learning when everyone assumes they are right. The room just becames a debating arena - with no one humble enough to accept that someone’s better than himself.

I am really quite dismayed that some people lack a little humility - when they prefer to talk, be heard, be proud and be awarded than to understand and to listen to other’s needs.

A Wild Thing Never Sorry For Itself

"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself."

I stepped out of college with flying colors. From a typical university that teaches lessons first before tests. Sometimes I want to ask myself if I’m worth the diploma I received. I’m now at work, trying to put everything I’ve learned to some sense.

Here in this world, they don’t give lessons in advance. You are put to the test right then and there. I guess that’s what they mean when they say "You learn the hard way…".

I told myself I need to get back home. Be who I used to be. But then again, if a wild thing never feels sorry for itself, why would I be sorry for mine?

First Weekend at Work

Life was pretty hard these past days. We’ll be starting to work on our Kanji next week. So I really have to work hard for our Nihonggo. I just got fifty from our last Module End Exam so reviews are a necessity.

We watched Shichinin ni No Samurai last night. It is actually a 1960’s film. You bet it is because of it being shown in black and white. Hehehe.. I woke up at 8 this morning to make up with my lost sleep this week. And have to head to work today again (without pay!). I’m still a trainee though.

I’m now here in the office with Kevs and Jedd. (Too bad they lost their phones last week.) Jufu San, and the rest are still on their way. Have to take some caffeine.

Mwah!

Haponesang Hilaw

"Konnichiwa. Hajime mashite!! Watashi wa Kiasu desu. Ni juu isai desu. Davao kara kimashita. Daigaku no Immaculate Conception kara kimashita. Douzo yurishiku onegaishimasu"…

This was the very first paragraph I was able to recite in Nihonggo when we had the opening ceremony of ACTION TRAINING here in Cebu. I seemed like a baby uttering her very first words in front of strange faces. And it was the very first time I said something in a language I could barely understand.

I do appreciate the change in environment and the change of lifestyle we have. A 3-hour sleep every night is considered to be a blessing. And I’m starting to learn the lesson of "grace under pressure" as we report to the office before 8am every morning just to finish our set of shukudai, to study our lessons, and to memorize our vocabulary for our daily quiz. Apart from these are our mini-projects, Philnits classes, Module-end exams, and course-end exams.

I suffered failing quizzes and kenshusei-sensei confrontations during the first few weeks here. But now, I’m getting better in reading, and writing in Hiragana, and Katakana. Next week, we’ll also be studying Kanji.

Kiasu San’s Life Way Back Home

This is my third week here. And I had endured all emotional troubles already. I miss my bed, my pillow, our refrigerator, and the ordinary life I had. I miss waking up my parents and sister with really tight hugs, tickling my brother’s foot just to rise for breakfast, goodnight kisses, and leaning on my kare’s shoulder just letting time pass without saying anything, trying to read each other’s silent mind. I miss my space, my life way back home.

Japanese Culture

I am now starting to embrace Japanese culture and to understand it by heart. It values discipline, and exellence in every thing. Albeit it’s hard to cope up with the sudden change of environment, I have no choice but to adapt. And now, I’m starting to appreciate it. Discipline and excellence come with hardwork and a little bit of sacrifice. These words were never new to me. But now, I’m taking these in "big dosage" already.

Right at this Moment

Right at this moment, I’m trying to study Algorithms, and Data Structures for the quiz later this afternoon. I still have to work on my Nihonggo vocabulary because I’m at most 30 words and 2 days behind my quota. 33 minutes from now, we’ll have our defense of our individual mini-project I made just last night - EXPRESSION EVALUATION using only stacks. Tonight, I’ll be working on 3 sets of shukudai to be submitted first thing in the morning. Tomorrow will also be our course-ender exams on Basic Theories, Hardware, Basic Software, Multimedia Systems, and System Configuration. and quizzes on System Development and Operations.

have to say ’sayonara’.. 20 more minutes before the inevitable….
